Computer Help

The website has been undergoing digital surgery, so to speak. A few changes have been made to the way the website looks and how it is read, in particular for readers who find it hard to read the small print of websites.

To this end we include a text re-sizer which is situated on the top side of the website. This enables readers to customize the text to a size which is easier on their eyes. Once configured to your liking, the main text stays that way.

And the wonders of modern technology cease not there!

Since 2002, we’ve periodically put our technical caps on and given out some handy advice for people who are interested in computers and everything that is tied in with this technology and the useful things it can do for us.

This particular ‘thread’ will concentrate on any advice or news related to computers and software. In particular we’ll try to pass on tips and links to useful free programmes and utilities so this thread contains any useful advice.

Computer security is a big wedge of this particular cake on offer – and computer maintenance is also an area many neglect until the hard drive breaks and 3 years of emails are lost – plus all your settings –photos, music and video and maybe that next best seller.

Follow us as we hand out the advice that matters on all the computer hassles that affect us and all those smart programmes that the pros use and some they have never heard of.

The Liverpool Times will be upgrading our website engine to the latest release of WordPress 2.01 - so there a little bit of technical ‘higgery jiggery’ that might stop the site appearing for a few hours.

Fear not, all should be well and we’ve got a few top new stories about those freeloading Republicans of Knowsley coming up if all goes well and the luck of the Irish is with us.

Just like Ye Olde Days!

The latest themes for The Liverpool Times can be found by changing the themes in the side menu. One is a simple adaptation of the WordPress ‘Classic theme’, with a slight ‘fix’ to an issue which many users have pointed out. The theme also has a fixed width unlike the WordPress Classic original which is flexible and stretches to fill a screen.

That first new theme is called Scouse Classic. It is very easy to read, so swap over if you feel the current look of the website is hard to read. For those interested, that theme is an adaptation of WordPress classic, with a ‘fix’ to the footer problem and its a fixed width, not flexible.

The other theme is called Ye Olde Scouse Classic. This is our most original theme yet. You won’t believe it’s the same website, but it is!

Giving something back

The Liverpool Times uses WordPress blog publishing software to run the website we now have before us. WordPress is one of the best, if not the best open source website platforms out there. It is a website, but much more than a website. What we have is basically a free website publishing platform for the people.

WordPress enables people with little or no knowledge of website design to run their own website. Some call it a ‘blog’, but depending on the content, you can call it what you like and make it into anything you wish. Many professionals use WordPress websites or blogs. A homeless person could run a blog also. Never before has there been a period in the history of mankind when a King or Pauper might be able to reach a mass audience.

Plus - How to find all your deleted emails, and really delete them!

Knowsley councillors generally use Microsoft Outlook or maybe the more upmarket version which is just called Outlook. Back in the days when councillors used to email The Kirkby Times, that was the situation as regards email. Either way, it generally makes emails easy to find. You do not need a few months to investigate email. More like a few minutes and we will prove it to you after we once again try to help Knowsley council, including their race relations officer, to understand what racism is.

Microsoft use secret files, hidden files, which basically keep a record of what you have been up to. A record of every website visited, and every search word you have typed. More frightening is that Microsoft feel inclined to also keep records of all your emails. Even if you delete the emails, they are still there!

Most people will have received an email (or a few hundred) which go a little like this….

“Dear Sir / Madam,

Please note that Your Bank of Scotland Halifax Internet Banking Account is about to expire. In order for it to remain active, please use the link below to proceed and restore Your Account.”

Windows Vista is the latest operating system from Microsoft. It’s already been ‘cracked’, which mean you can download it for nothing. That, as the owner of a sick bird of prey once said, is illegal. But as crime goes, I don’t think the police are going to be feeling all roused up at the thought of people downloading a copy of Windows Vista.
